In this Zoom meeting, we will have a presentation on Clean Energy Implementation Challenges with a Focus on Biomass Conversion by Frank Petrocelli, Ph.D., Senior Risk Analyst, Clean Energy at Ariel Re (www.arielre.com).

Frank Petrocelli has been involved in AIChE’s Fuels and Petrochemicals Division, Process Development Division, and the Societal Impact Operating Council. He has also led the development of the AIChE display at the US Science and Engineering Festival in Washington DC.

Meeting participants are eligible for a 1-hr Professional Development Hour (PDH). Certificates may be requested by reply email. The meeting will be hosted by Peter Kabatek, Susquehanna Local Section Chair.

Agenda:

  • 6:30 – 6:45 pm Introductions, Attendees, Speaker

  • 7:45 – 8:00 pm Q&A, Feedback and concluding remarks

Abstract:

Supporting global efforts to reduce man-made carbon emissions to mitigate the effects of global warming, various clean energy technologies are being deployed as alternatives to fossil-fuel-based energy generation. This transition encompasses a wide range of technologies, including solar photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines, battery energy storage, water electrolysis (for hydrogen), fuel cells, and various biomass conversion processes. In particular, conversion of biomass to produce liquid fuels is seen as a viable approach to decarbonize hard-to-electrify sectors, such as aviation, marine transport, and heavy-duty land transport. In this presentation, Frank Petrocelli will draw upon his own experiences to explore some of the key challenges in implementing novel biomass conversion technologies at commercial scale.

Speaker: Frank Petrocelli, Ph.D.

Frank Petrocelli obtained his Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Pennsylvania and his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering from University of Delaware.  After a 30+ year career in various process R&D roles with Mobil Oil (3 years) and Air Products (29 years), Frank Petrocelli is currently the Senior Risk Analyst for the Clean Energy Team at Ariel Re, a specialty insurance company based in Bermuda. Throughout his career, Frank has been involved in improving and creating process technologies across a wide range of technologies, including fluidized catalytic cracking, emulsion polymerization, industrial catalysis, oxyfuel coal combustion (with carbon capture), hydrogen production, and waste gasification. In his present role, Frank conducts technical risk assessments for clean energy projects seeking financing for initial commercial installations.
