Abstract:

How Chemical Engineering Has Kept my Work and Life Interesting In the first part of this talk, Alejandra will discuss her experience from aspiring scientist to patent prosecutor. She will focus on how the rigorous training as a Chemical Engineer have shaped her way of tackling problems and help her pursue many passions from research and product development to sustainability and intellectual property. Alejandra will briefly discuss cases she has encountered through her professional journey where her ChemE background has helped her “save the day”. In the second part, Alejandra will present a brief overview of recent learnings about protecting ideas and filing patents, including aspects that she wishes she understood when she was at the bench and that she thinks each innovator should know.

Biography:

Alejandra Camacho is a Technical Specialist at Marshall, Gerstein and Borun with over two years of experience in patent prosecution. In her current role at Marshall, Gerstein & Borun, Alejandra helps scientists and engineers protect their innovations by drafting patents and following up throughout the prosecution process. A chemical engineer by training, Alejandra pursued a Doctoral degree in Materials Science and Engineering with focus on applying electron microscopy techniques to the structural characterization of catalysts. Curious by nature, Alejandra engaged in research projects beyond her core area of expertise, including archaeological materials, biomaterials, and failure analysis and mechanical characterization. Upon graduation, Dr. Camacho worked in several industries including microelectronics, personal care, and specialty chemicals companies, where she held roles in R&D, sales and marketing. Her accomplishments have resulted in her inclusion in leading peer-reviewed and industry publications and presentations at multiple conferences. Alejandra is passionate about learning new technologies and writing stories of scientific nature, which she combines to support innovation in her role in patent prosecution.
