Presentation Abstract:

Launched in 2017, the Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment (RAPID) Institute is the tenth member of the Manufacturing USA network. With a vision towards a sustainable future, RAPID prioritizes the creation of breakthrough technologies that boost the energy efficiency of manufacturing processes and champion the development of modular processes. Since its establishment, RAPID has flourished into a premier hub for process intensification, drawing active participation from industry, academia, and non-profit organizations.

The webinar will delve into the journey of the RAPID Institute, spotlighting its key technology focus areas and significant undertakings. Attendees will gain insights into real-world applications of process intensification principles, exemplifying the improved energy efficiency coupled with reduced carbon footprint. Additionally, the discourse will shed light on harnessing modern digital tools to cultivate sustainable manufacturing processes will be discussed.

Speaker Biographies:

Dr. Yang Luo serves as a Senior R&D leader at Honeywell Advanced Materials. She has extensive industrial experiences in innovation strategy, technology roadmap, portfolio management, and process development. Under her leadership, multiple high-impact process technologies were invented, developed, commercialized, and leading to winning offerings in the market.

Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Luo has been the recipient of numerous accolades. These include the Prism Award from the Society of Women Engineers, the Linde Global Innovation Award, the Praxair Innovation Award, and recognition in the Delphi Innovation Hall of Fame. Furthermore, she has been honored with the Delphi Boss Kettering Award, the Society of Automotive Engineering’s Environmental Excellence in Transportation Award, and the Delphi Environmental and Energy Project of the Year Award.

As an elected AIChE fellow, Dr. Luo significantly contributed to the success of the Department of Energy’s Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment Manufacturing Institute, operated by AIChE. In her tenure, she held numerous leadership positions, notably as the Chair of the RAPID Governing Board. Moreover, she has co-chaired AIChE educational initiatives, emphasizing the alignment of industrial and academic expectations in Chemical Engineering Education.

Dr. Luo's earned a PhD from North Carolina State University and a BS from Zhejiang University, both in Chemical Engineering.

Ignasi Palou-Rivera is the Executive Director and Chief Technology Officer of the RAPID Manufacturing Institute. Additionally, he serves as the President of the US Manufacturing Innovation Council (an independent non-profit connecting the Manufacturing USA institutes) and the Chair of the Manufacturing USA Council. With a career spanning more than 25 years, Ignasi has diverse expertise in chemical process development, process modeling, refinery planning, process technology valuation and commercialization, and R&D management.

Prior to joining RAPID in 2017, Ignasi held roles at Aspentech, Applied Materials, BP, LanzaTech, and Argonne National Laboratory. In 2023, Ignasi was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and has been heavily involved as a volunteer in both in the Computing & Systems Technology Division (CAST) and the Sustainable Engineering Forum (SEF) AIChE Communities. Ignasi is a Past Chair of the Sustainable Engineering Forum, part of the Institute for Sustainability (IfS) Board, and a member of the PAIC Policy Committee.

Furthermore, Ignasi also teaches on entrepreneurship and IP management as an adjunct faculty at the Illinois Institute of Technology. His educational background includes an Engineer degree from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and was a post-doctoral researcher at MIT.
