Administration proposes pathway to US drug importation
The Trump administration on Wednesday outlined a two-part plan aimed at creating the foundation for safely importing prescription drugs from other countries to reduce costs. "The burden is on the leadership of the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure this actually leads to lower costs for consumers — not just for insurance companies and pharmacy benefit managers — and no harm is inflicted on patients and local communities," said BIO CEO Jim Greenwood in response to the proposed plan.
Grassley calls for unannounced inspection of foreign drug plants
Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, says the FDA should conduct unannounced inspections of foreign manufacturing facilities, particularly those in China and India, where most ingredients used in US pharmaceuticals are made. "As you are aware, I believe that drug importation will help to reduce drug costs for American consumers and patients," Grassley wrote in a letter to FDA acting Commissioner Norman Sharpless and HHS Secretary Alex Azar, but he noted his "position is predicated on the FDA ensuring the safety and efficacy of those drugs."

Bayer buys out remaining shares of BlueRock in deal worth up to $600M
Bayer will acquire the remaining 59.2% of privately held shares from BlueRock Therapeutics and will make an upfront cash payment of $240 million plus milestones of up to $360 million. The acquisition will grant Bayer full rights to BlueRock's CELL+GENE platform.
