(186c) Cold Safety Management of Specific Areas of a Steam Cracker

Authors

Cold safety considerations are a critical issue for all ethylene producers and can have a significant impact on many parts of an Olefins unit. Previous presentations have highlighted different aspects of the hazard including evaluation methods, mitigation approaches and safety training protocols. While this information has provided an overview of cold safety mitigation, close inspection indicates that practitioners can also benefit from deeper dive into other common questions and scenarios encountered such as piping assessment and mitigations and cold flare system monitoring and sustainment.

This presentation intends to provide a summary of the practices gathered from industry feedback via the EPC Low Temperature Safety Subcommittee. It highlights the cold safety concerns in these specific areas, offer considerations on how to address those identified concerns and, finally, provide an overview of how possible mitigations may fit into an overall cold safety management program.
