Over the last few years, our eyes have been opened to global climate change, and to the environmental and geopolitical issues surrounding sustainability. As an example, by 2015, more than half of the regions in the world will experience some level of stress in water supply and management. Similar issues are surfacing for energy as well. IBM's smarter planet initiative aims to address important sustainability issues by developing solutions that give us the ability to manage our resources through effective sensing, data gathering and analytics to allow predictive real time action. I shall discuss the research activities at IBM to support a smarter planet and describe technologies for intelligent systems, smart energy, water, and healthcare.
