In 2021, the LA City Council passed a motion instructing LADWP to develop a plan for achieving 100% carbon free energy by 2035. In order to provide reliable, carbon free electricity for a city with almost 4 million people, LADWP must implement several alternative and emerging energy technologies, in addition to increasing buildouts of more conventional renewable energy infrastructure—like solar and wind. To phase out fossil fuel powered generation at LADWP’s in-basin plants and from the Intermountain Power Project, resources like green hydrogen and energy storage will be vital. LA will need a revamped and modern electric grid in order to achieve the city’s aggressive sustainability goals.
