This webinar will provide a basic introduction to flammable materials with the purpose of providing valuable information that a practicing engineer can use to prevent fires and explosions.
The presentation will first define the problem using accident statistics and some simple case histories, and then present the fire triangle. The various properties used to describe flammable materials will then be discussed. This includes the flammable limits, flash point temperature, auto-ignition temperature, limiting oxygen concentration, and minimum ignition energy. The equipment used to characterize these properties will also be discussed along with the limitations in the characterization procedures.
Finally, the webinar will present the triangle flammability diagram and show how it can be used to determine if a gas mixture is flammable.
