AIChE Journal Highlight: Mapping the Path to a Net-Zero Chemical Industry

Mitigating the adverse effects of over-exploitation of natural resources, persistent manufactured materials in the environment, and climate change requires drastic action. This includes striving toward a sustainable circular economy, which encourages the reuse and recycle of products with lower net value-chain emissions and less natural resource use. With increased public awareness and shareholder pressure for action, many corporations and governments have pledged to reach net-zero emissions and circularity. However, many of these pledges ignore several factors that are bound to constrain the pathway toward achieving them, as well as the possibility of shifting environmental impacts to other sectors of the economy or across time.

Guiding the transition from a linear polluting economy to a sustainable circular economy with net-zero emissions requires roadmaps that account for a lifecycle system boundary to prevent shifting impacts, an evolving landscape of climate action policy, and uncertain technology development.
