Who can attend?

AIChE invites all K-12 students, their parents, and educators to attend this exciting event.

All K-12 students must be accompanied by an adult chaperone (i.e. parent, teacher, guidance counselor, academic advisor, etc.). A single adult chaperone may accompany multiple K-12 students.

How much does it cost to attend the event?

The AIChE K-12 STEM Showcase is free for K-12 students, parents, and teachers, but advanced registration is required.

You may wish to purchase materials for the demos prior to the event so your K-12 students can follow along at home or in the classroom, or you can choose to watch the demonstrations instead.  A list of materials will be provided following completion of your advanced registration.

What can attendees look forward to?

STEM Demos

Interact with exciting AIChE member-led STEM demos, discussions, and experiments, covering a variety of topics.

This year's 20 STEM demos were hand-picked from over 80 entries, and are each thoughtfully designed for one of four unique grade level audiences:

  • Kindergarten through 2nd grade
  • 3rd grade through 5th grade
  • 6th grade through 8th grade
  • 9th grade through 12th grade

K-12 students will have a chance to interact with all 5 demos developed just for their grade level.  Materials lists for the demos will be provided to Group Leaders following completion of their advanced registration so K-12 students can follow along under the supervision of their group leader, parent, or teacher.

K-12 students will receive a handout explaining the science behind each demo for continued at-home learning.

Chaperones will receive a handout detailing the supplies, costs, procedure, & STEM concepts associated with each demo to allow for future replication at home or in the classroom.

There will be a few short breaks built into this 2-hour portion of the event.

AIChE Chem-E-Car Competition

Cheer on college students competing for the international title in the 22nd Annual AIChE Chem-E-Car Competition.

Get a front row seat to the virtual action at this exciting competition during which teams of college students design, build, and operate cars powered by a chemical energy source, that must safely travel a given distance, and stop using another chemical reaction.

Teams design and build their shoebox sized cars in the months leading up to this day, but they don’t find out the target distance their car must travel until 1 hour before the start of the competition, forcing teams to use real-time problem solving skills to succeed on competition day.

Who is AIChE?

AIChE is the world's leading organization for chemical engineering professionals, with more than 60,000 members from more than 110 countries.  Each year, over 1,500 chemical engineering undergraduate students and over 5,000 professional chemical engineers, faculty, and graduate students travel from all over the world to attend the AIChE Annual Meeting and Annual Student Conference.

The AIChE K-12 STEM Showcase will take place during the AIChE Annual Meeting and Annual Student Conference, offering the next generation of STEM professionals (your K-12 students) a unique opportunity to learn more about STEM &Chemical Engineering directly from AIChE’s best and brightest Chemical Engineering professionals and students.

The AIChE STEM Showcase is generously supported by the AIChE Foundation and 3M and is made possible by AIChE members and volunteer leaders from our K-12 Committee, Executive Student Committee (ESC), participants in the AIChE K-12 STEM Outreach Competition, and general AIChE Annual Meeting and Annual Student Conference Attendees.
