Patrick O’Brien is a Senior Safety and Cybersecurity Engineer at exida. He leads a variety of functional safety and cybersecurity consulting services and training courses for end user industrial facilities. He specializes in safety/cybersecurity lifecycle tasks including gap assessment, management program development, PHA, LOPA, SIL verification, and cybersecurity risk assessment across many different industry applications including oil and gas, specialty chemical, machinery, and robotics. He is a coauthor of Implementing IEC 62443: A Pragmatic Approach to Cybersecurity one of the first book published on industrial cybersecurity. He is also the project lead for a new Center of Chemical Process Safety book Managing Cybersecurity in the Process Industries – A Risk-based Approach. Mr. O’Brien graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in German Language and Culture. At Pennsylvania State University, he received the International Engineering Certificate recognizing his completion of coursework, language study, and international experiences that contribute towards a global engineering perspective. Mr. O’Brien is also a certified functional safety professional and certified automation cybersecurity specialist.
