A sustained effort is required over the next few decades to halt climate change due to global warming by reducing CO2 emissions. The increasing availability of renewable electricity and development of new technology such as high energy density batteries and fuel cells will reduce our reliance on fossil fuels; however, some applications, such as long-haul aviation, are particularly challenging to de-carbonise.

Sustainable liquid fuels which fit into exiting supply chains and avoid changes to transportation infrastructure and engines are easiest to adopt. The conversion of waste, biomass or existing CO2 emissions into sustainable fuels via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis offers one solution to this problem.

JM/BP have been working together for many years on Fischer-Tropsch technology culminating in the development of the revolutionary CANSTM catalyst carrier technology, which enables sustainable aviation and other liquid fuels to be made economically at a wide range of production capacities.

This technology was selected by Fulcrum Bioenergy for its first commercial-scale waste to liquid fuels facility in Storey County, Nevada, USA.

We will describe the benefits of the CANS catalyst carrier technology and how the various aspects of the technology have been scaled up from the laboratory to full scale manufacture.
