Transitioning energy systems to significantly reduce GHG emissions while meeting increasing energy demand is a global imperative as well as a significant challenge. Rapidly evolving digital technologies will play a key role in this transition. ExxonMobil is encouraging open, standards-based approaches to technology development as seen in the Open Process Automation Forum currently developing open standards for interoperable control systems components. Artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques are being explored to evolve control systems to be more autonomous and require less human intervention. 3D models and digital twins serve as a platform to transform how manufacturing and production facilities are operated and maintained.
