In an effort to improve data transparency, identify true costs, and most importantly, capitalize on opportunities to improve the safety culture throughout the enterprise, United developed a data visualization program, to communicate information clearly through graphical means including Geo Mapping. By centralizing big data from various departments and organizations, we can mine big data to a level that provide universal messaging through visualization. The ultimate goal was to reduce the frequency and severity of employee injuries and implement the daily use of data to address trends and decrease the number events impacting the health and safety of our employees as well as protecting our aircraft from damage.

United’s Corporate Safety team in a collaborative agreement is working with the University of New Haven in changing the way data is processed, analyzed and communicated. Our approach is allowing 24/7 universal access to data and streamlining analyst processing time to a fraction of the time while being more comprehensive in what the data means!

United was able to apply the same logic to employee injuries and aircraft events globally across the network, integrating safety and operational data to allow end users to analyze events down to a specific location (such as a specific gate at an airport); the type of equipment involved; the type of injury; frequency; and impact of such events. We are now applying the same logic to how facilities and equipment are maintained and operated in way to be more predicative.

United Airlines has seen success as frontline leaders continue to rely on the data visualization dashboards to actively manage the health and safety of our employees. These techniques are being utilized by operational division to eliminate waste and improve efficiency throughout the airline.
