The teaching and research interests of faculty often shift as they navigate their careers in higher education. Exposure to student experiences and challenges in the classroom can lead faculty towards interests in engineering education. While research ideas often come easily, knowing how to conduct rigorous research in engineering education can be more challenging. Navigating a transition into social science research methods can be difficult and intimidating, resulting in faculty choosing not to pursue these research interests. Therefore, this workshop is designed for faculty in engineering who are interested in starting research in engineering education. Through the workshop, we will provide a pathway for navigating the development of an engineering education research project. Faculty will have the opportunity to work through a scaffolded activity to identify a research area of interest and brainstorm potential research methods. By the end of the workshop, faculty should understand the steps necessary to establish a rigorous and ethically sound study in engineering education.
