(223b) A National Technology and Business Transformation Roadmap for Smart Process Manufacturing

Smart process manufacturing (SPM) refers to a design and operational paradigm involving the integration of measurement and actuation; environment, safety, and health (ES&H) protection; regulatory control; real-time optimization and monitoring; and planning and scheduling. It is motivated by generally increasing dynamic demands on manufacturing for economic viability, minimizing environmental impacts and better management of risk and uncertainty. SPM is an integrated approach that provides for a much stronger predictive mode of operation for greater robustness to risk and changing situations, greater flexibility and responsiveness to overall goals, and a much swifter incident-response capability. It is the enterprise-wide application of ?smart? models and cyber infrastructure technologies, tools, and systems coupled with knowledge-enabled personnel to plan, design, build, operate, maintain, and manage process manufacturing facilities in full concert with the business and manufacturing missions of the enterprise.

This presentation details a recent report on a national technology and business transformation roadmap developed by the NSF-funded SPM Engineering Virtual Organization (EVO). The SPM EVO is an industry-academic community specifically focused on SPM technologies, approaches, workforce requirements and transformation. The roadmap provides technical and operational direction for the chemical processing industry, and for the corporations, universities and consortia that endorse the concepts to move from today's operations to a future desired state. Technical and operational change directions are laid out as set of consensus developed priority pathways, or lanes, that lead to a realization of the SPM vision.
