The non-ideal behavior and polydisperity of asphaltenes, a complex and associating material in petroleum, make the simple and direct study of them difficult. Consequently, accurate phase behavior and flow assurance modeling have lagged behind other areas. This webinar focuses on recent studies designed to provide a mechanistic understanding of asphaltenes.

Join Michael Hoepfner—an asphaltene mechanism and behavior expert—to get up to date on how asphaltene research is being applied, from the nanometer scale to the oilfield. This live webinar co-sponsored by NSEF takes place on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, 2:00-3:00 pm EST.

In 60 minutes, you'll learn about recent studies designed to improve understanding of the nanometer length scale association mechanisms of asphaltenes and how to relate these studies to a macroscopic perspective. Asphaltenes are believed to associate into small aggregates, called nanoaggregates, that further cluster into fractal super structures. In this webinar, you'll learn that, without a mechanistic understanding of asphaltenes, it is unclear how to model this process. Should you use molecules, nanoaggregates, clusters or flocs as the primary depositing unit, each with different properties and concentrations in the oil? While no conclusive answer exists, the insight you'll gain in this webinar will move you closer to resolving this and other key questions about asphaltene behavior. This discussion will also delve into asphaltene deposition, precipitation, and x-ray neutron scattering techniques.

Take a look at your agenda:

  • What sizes of asphaltenes are depositing? Answering this key flow assurance question
  • Why a mechanistic understanding of asphaltenes is critical
  • Update: Recent asphaltene studies and how they may impact your processes
  • X-ray and neutron scattering as experimental techniques
