2023 W. David Smith, Jr. Graduate Publication Award

Congratulations to Sungho Shin, the 2023 W. David Smith, Jr. Graduate Publication award winner! Sungho received this award for the journal paper: “Exponential decay of sensitivity in graph-structured nonlinear programs”, S. Shin, M. Anitescu, and V.M. Zavala, SIAM Journal on Optimization 32(2): 1156-1183 (2022).

Sungho Shin is a postdoctoral researcher at the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory. He will be joining the Chemical Engineering Department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an Assistant Professor in the summer of 2024. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, under the guidance of Victor M. Zavala. He holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and Mathematics from Seoul National University. His research interests include large-scale nonlinear optimization, control theory, and their applications to energy systems. He is the main developer of the nonlinear optimization solver, MadNLP.jl. His contributions have been recognized through various awards, including the 2020 AIChE Annual Meeting CAST Directors' Student Presentation Award, the 2021 IFAC ADCHEM Young Author Award, and the 2021 IFAC NMPC Young Author Award. He has been the recipient of the Korea Presidential Science Fellowship, Kwanjeong Fellowship, and Grainger Wisconsin Distinguished Graduate Fellowship.
