2023-2025 Director - CAST 2022 Election Results

Congratulations to Dr. Fernando Lima, the newly elected 2023-2025 Director. Dr. Fernando V. Lima joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at West Virginia University (WVU) in 2013. He is now an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering since August 2019. Dr. Lima was also Visiting Faculty in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) during the academic year 2021-2022. He received his B.S. degree from the University of São Paulo in 2003 and his Ph.D. from Tufts University in 2007, both in Chemical Engineering. Upon completion of his Ph.D., he was a Research Associate at the University of Wisconsin and a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Lima has been a member of AIChE and the CAST Division since 2006. He is currently the 2022 Program Coordinator for CAST 10B Area of AIChE (Systems and Process Control). As a CAST Director, he intends to support the increase of CAST online presence and further the engagement of graduate and undergraduate student populations in CAST. He also plans to target the further involvement of CAST with other divisions that encompass emerging application areas, including decarbonization, sustainability, hydrogen economy, digitalization and advanced manufacturing.

Among his awards are the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund (ACS-PRF) Doctoral New Investigator (DNI) Award, the Faculty Early Career Development Program Award from National Science Foundation (NSF-CAREER), the WVU Statler College of Engineering Excellence in Research Awards (2), and the Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research (I&ECR) Excellence in Review Award. He has also served as the Area Chair for the Next-Gen Manufacturing Sessions of AIChE 2021, and as the AIChE Society Review Chair for the 2022 American Control Conference (ACC). He is guest editor for Special Issues of I&ECR, Frontiers and Sustainability journals and has been member of the Editorial Boards of Journal of Process Control and Processes.
