Inaugural AIChE Beer Brewing Competition

The first AIChE Beer Brewing Competition (ABBC) will be taking place this year at the 2017 AIChE Annual Meeting on October 29th. There are  about 20 AIChE Local Section teams, comprised of homebrewers from all over the US, competing for multiple prizes, from best-of-show award to the most seasonally flavored. The prizes are big, the processes are batch, and the competition is exciting. The winners will be announced at the Young Professionals’ Social at the Lumber Exchange in the evening.

Beers will be brewed in at least one of two categories (with an option for each team to submit one beer of each category) – Dark & Malty and Bright & Hoppy, and the competition will consist of two parts: 1) a tasting competition, and 2) a poster presentation. Professional Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) judges will score beers according to a standard beer tasting rubric. The poster presentations will consist of the beer recipe, the brewing process, mass balances, and percent alcohol-by-volume calculations among other things unique to each beer.

While the competition will be judged by professional beer judges, there will also be an opportunity for you to be a guest tasting judge.  There will be a limited number of guest judge spots available and will be filled on a first come, first served basis.  Stop by the competition, get there early and see what fellow ChemE’s have brewed up!
