Vincent Wheeler is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering and Technology at the University of Wisconsin–Stout—a teaching-intensive institution with a focus on hands-on learning. After completing his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities in 2014, he was a post-doctoral researcher in the Computational Science Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO. He then moved down under to work as a lecturer and research fellow at the Australian National University where he got his first experience teaching a college course; researched technologies based on high-temperature, solar-driven thermochemistry; biked by mobs of kangaroos every day; and even learned to appreciate vegemite. He now spends most of his time teaching budding engineers-to-be how to think like an engineer but remains active in research pursuits in the areas of solar fuels, maximizing the speed of a toboggan loaded with two children, switchable PV windows, and brewing the perfect cup of coffee.
