Dr. Stephen W. Thiel is a Professor - Educator in the Chemical Engineering program at the University of Cincinnati and serves as the Chemical Engineering undergraduate program director. His teaching focuses on the capstone Process Design Sequence. In the past his research focused on adsorption and ion exchange, including application to the removal of mercury from coal combustion flue gas, the thermodynamics of adsorption of proteins on mesoporous materials, the development of a biocatalytic membrane reactor and the thermodynamics of carbon dioxide capture in liquid solutions. His initial research area was transport of multicomponent mixtures in polymeric membranes, and formation of asymmetric membranes. More recently, his research contributions have focused on techno-economic analysis.

Dr. Thiel has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech (including a co-op experience at Oak Ridge National Laboratory), and an MS and PhD from The University of Texas at Austin. Before joining the University of Cincinnati faculty full-time in 2006, he worked for Cognis Corporation (formerly part of Henkel Corporation) in roles ranging from Process Engineering to Regulatory Compliance to Strategic Planning to Process Development.
