P. Randall Schunk

P. Randall (Randy) Schunk received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science in 1989 from the University of Minnesota.    He retired from Sandia National Laboratories in 2024 after 35 years of service.   He has been on the faculty at the University of New Mexico since 2009 and has been active in research and development of manufacturing process science.   

Throughout his career at Sandia National Laboratories Randy’s work has focused on the fundamentals of process science and manufacturing.   Among his many activities in this space, he has led two industrial consortia aimed at developing modeling and simulation tools to address manufacturing and process science, with a focus on polymer and related processing, thin-liquid film coating, and colloidal/nanoparticle dispersion (ink) processing.  The consortia involved more than 15 companies, including 3M, Corning, and Procter and Gamble.    He has also been heavily involved in additive manufacturing and printed electronics, specialty metals processing, welding/soldering/brazing and more, primarily in support of national security missions at Sandia National Laboratories.  He has more than 50 publications and book chapters on these and related topics.
