Group Leader at Argonne National Laboratory

Jordi Cabana is jointly appointed as a Professor at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and a Group Leader in the Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). He is also the co-Director of the George Crabtree Institute for Discovery and Sustainability, a joint program between UIC and ANL.

He holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry (2000) and a Ph.D. in Materials Science (2004) from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. Prior to his appointment at UIC, Professor Cabana was a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook University from 2005 to 2008, and a Research Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 2008 to 2013.

His research is in the general area of physical and inorganic chemistry of materials for electrochemical applications, with emphasis on redox and transport properties. Since joining UIC in 2013, Prof. Cabana has raised over $7M in direct funding for his research from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Defense (DOD), also supporting additional funding for training programs and instrumentation that add to more than $8M.

He has published over 190 articles in peer-reviewed journals, with an h-index of 62 according to Google Scholar. He was designated “Up-and-Coming” by Chemistry of Materials in 2017. He was a Scialog Fellow in Advanced Energy Storage from 2017 to 2020, and he received Scialog Awards in 2018 and 2020.
