David Couling

Principal Investigator
The Dow Chemical Company

David Couling began his career at Dow Chemical in the Core R&D Process Sciences group. In his role at Dow he was responsible for developing fundamental understanding of labscale chemical processes to ensure successful commercial scaleup. During his tenure, he directly supported several Dow businesses across varied technology spaces, including Dow AgroSciences, Dow Coating Materials, Dow Hydrocarbons, and Dow Automotive. His research focused on developing technology for key unit operations including reactions, distillations, extractions, and crystallizations. These advancements reduced cost, decreased waste production, and enabled a successful transition from the lab to commercial scale. He joined Corteva Agriscience in 2019, continuing his role as a process development engineer. His current role combines project leadership and predictive model development to support advanced manufacturing technologies. David is the recipient of three internal technology innovation awards from Dow and Corteva and is a member of the Corteva team honored with the 2024 ACS Heroes of Chemistry Award for the development of RinskorTM active. He has led or contributed to the successful commercial launch of >4 Corteva active ingredients. He leads the internal Reaction Engineering Community of Practice at Corteva and has repeatedly served on the planning committee for the AIChE Process Development Symposium. David is currently a member of AIChE and ACS. David earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Notre Dame and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from MIT.
