Neha Kamat

Neha Kamat is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. The Kamat Lab's interests lie in constructing minimal systems, or artificial cells, as a tool to understand and recreate certain cellular behaviors. They use emerging engineering methods in material science and synthetic biology to construct in vitro models of cellular membranes to be used for fundamental studies on membrane mechanobiology and for the design of new therapeutic tools.Read more

James Chappell

The goal of the Chappell lab is to forward our ability to understand and engineer the bacteria domain of life. Central to this is our ability to control how cells express their genetic code. Our lab focuses on understanding how the biomolecule RNA can be designed to create synthetic regulators of gene expression—allowing for the manipulation of natural cellular processes to elicit deeper biological understanding and for the engineering of new synthetic cellular functions. As such our lab focuses both on the creation of new gene regulatory tools and their application.

Central to our...Read more

Jeff Barrick

My research group’s interests are at the interface between microbial evolution and synthetic biology. We study rates and mechanisms of genome evolution using laboratory populations of microbes, including in a >35-year experiment with Escherichia coli and using the naturally competent bacterium Acinetobacter baylyi. We investigate unwanted and unintentional evolution of DNA sequences in engineered cells so we can predict and prevent this uniquely biological failure mode. We develop open-source tools for analyzing bacterial genome resequencing data and annotating plasmids. Recently, we...Read more

Zachary Sun

Zachary Sun, CEO of Tierra Biosciences (formerly Synvitrobio), has been developing fundamental synthetic biology technologies since 2006, and has published work on MAGE genomic engineering in Nature and on a cell-free prototyping environment in eLife. The latter forms the basis for Tierra Biosciences, which he founded in 2015 to conduct natural product discovery using cell-free synthetic biology. He holds a PhD in biology from Caltech and AB in biology from Harvard.Read more
