Hydrogen Transportation and Storage

The increased use of hydrogen for fuel cell electric vehicles and other applications will heighten the need for safe transportation and storage of liquid and gas hydrogen at user locations. This increased demand will see the use of hydrogen at near-consumer locations (such as refueling stations) as well as at industrial locations.

Methods of transportation include highway vehicles (cryogenic and gas hydrogen), railcars, pipelines, and cylinders. Storage options include cryogenic liquid tanks, high pressure ASME and DOT tubes, and gas cylinders. The presentation will cover how to determine the optimal and safest storage/transportation option for a particular application.

Additional topics include updates on the following: (1) improved storage systems siting requirements, (2) methods for reduction of noise, and (3) more specific emergency response guidelines for hydrogen transport vehicles and fuel cell electrical vehicles.
