(688f) Effectively Communicating Sustainability and Engineering within Federal Policy

Pennington, A. - Presenter, Federal Energy Management Program
As engineers and scientists we wonder why it seems that science is void from the decisions made be policy makers and governmental entities. There are scientists and engineers in government, but we have to be willing to put in the work to be effective, and those implementing policy have to be willing to listen. The ideas presented in this talk will give insight into how varying levels can effectively communicate scientific and sustainable ideas to those in policy. Part of this talk will be describing the process for becoming a Science and Technology Policy Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as the roles of a fellow in the Executive branch of the federal government and how sustainability can be communicated to an array of non-scientific audiences.
