This presentation covers fundamentals involved in process safety practice and how to understand your process environment as related to process safety. The anticipated outcome is a better awareness of process safety and a list of "tools" to help you analysis process environments as well as make them safer.
Walk into any industrial setting and the first concern will be your personal safety. Secondly will be a concern for the protection of company personnel, nearby residents, and the equipment infrastructure. This second concern defines the nature of process safety. This is a radical change for many students and young engineers making the transition from a rigorous chemical engineering education to a rigorous chemical engineering practice. How do you make an impact? What fundamental expectations are required of you joining a new firm in regards to "safety?” First and foremost is to understand the difference and commonality between personal safety and process safety. Secondly, what is a scenario? What precautions exist to prevent an unwanted event such as a fire, explosion, or release from occurring? Finally, if such happens, what can be done to mitigate these events?
