Modeling Corrosion and Corrosion Protection

Corrosion affects nearly every metal structure, causing expensive and dangerous damage. Developing more effective protection systems could help minimize the cost of corrosion damage by billions of dollars worldwide. However, designing effective protection systems is challenging, as it requires an in-depth understanding of the corrosion processes involved.

Modeling of the transport and reactions that take place in corrosion and corrosion protection processes is an efficient way to gain insight into and predict the effects of corrosion. High-fidelity models must include thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, transport phenomena, current distribution, electric fields, operational conditions, and a geometrical description of the studied system. The results of a high-fidelity model can aid in understanding corrosion and in the development of new and improved corrosion protection systems.

The white paper "Modeling Corrosion and Corrosion Protection" examines the theoretical background of various types of corrosion in detail, including galvanic, crevice, and pitting corrosion, as well as anodic and cathodic corrosion protection methods.
