Reverse osmosis (RO) is a desalination technique developed in the mid-twentieth century, and first applied commercially in the early 1960s. RO membranes are used with everything from drinking water and boiler feedwater to generating ultrapure water for the pharmaceutical and microelectronics industries. Despite the commonplace nature of RO, the technology is still a bit of a mystery to many operators and their teams. Understanding the technology is critical to keep an RO system operating well at minimal cost.
