Recent Cyber Attack Raises Alarm

A security advisory released by the Dept. of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) in February detailed the response to a recent cyberattack on a natural gas compression facility.

“This cyberattack is concerning, because while this natural gas company was nonfunctional, citizens of the U.S. were cut off from necessary energy resources,” says Damon Small, technical director of cybersecurity consulting firm NCC Group North America.

Such a cyberattack represents a new norm for the chemical process industries (CPI) — one where cybersecurity must be considered just as important as any other type of safety...
