Air Emissions Decrease by More than Half Since 2005

February
2017

Facilities subject to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) reporting requirements reduced their air emissions of toxic chemicals by 56% (851 million lb) since 2005. Of the chemicals tracked, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, toluene, and mercury were among those with the most significant reductions in air emissions.

The report shows that action by EPA, state and tribal regulators, and the regulated community have helped to dramatically lower toxic air emissions over the past 10 years, says Jim Jones, EPA Assistant Administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention.
