Electrolyte Heats Up and Keeps Working

Engineers at Rice Univ. have developed an electrolyte and separator for rechargeable Li-ion batteries that can safely operate in high temperatures.

Batteries made with the new composite material functioned in temperatures of 150°C (302°F) for more than a month with negligible loss of efficiency, says Rulickel Ajayan, founding chair of the Materials Science and NanoEngineering Dept. at Rice Univ.

The key ingredient of the composite, which acts as an electroltye and separator, is hexagonal boron nitride — a one-atom-thick compound sometimes referred to as white graphene.
