Catalyst Transforms CO2 into Ethylene

A new catalyst uses copper nanoparticles and nitrogen-rich graphene to selectively and efficiently transform CO2 into ethylene. The researchers from Brown Univ. who developed the catalyst envision it being used to add value to the CO2 emitted from chemical plants.

Converting CO2 into fuels and valuable chemicals could help reduce the consumption of petroleum-based feedstock, says Shouheng Sun, a professor of chemistry and of engineering at Brown Univ. who led the development of the catalyst along with his postdoc, Qing Li, now a professor at Huazhong Univ. of Science and Technology. “We simply just regenerate what we would consume — chemical to CO2, CO2 to chemical.”
