Flow Battery Enlists Gravity, Not Pumps and Valves

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have designed a flow battery without the valves and pumps typically required.

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) reversibly convert electrical energy to chemical energy. Unlike traditional rechargeable batteries, which store electricity internally in redox pairs fixed on two electrodes, RFBs store their energy externally in two flowing electrolytes. The energy capacity (a function of the electrolyte volume) and power (a function of the size of the cell stacks) are decoupled in the flow battery, providing design flexibility...
