Flash dryers have typically not been able to dry some products, such as feed streams that have low viscosity or are thixotropic. This company’s Swirl Fluidizer flash dryers now feature a new, patent-pending feed system, which allows the unit to dry ultralow-viscosity and thixotropic feeds to produce powders with consistent moisture content and product quality. Inside the dual feed system, one feed stream carries the liquid feed product to the drying chamber; the second carries dry powder (which is added to boost the solids content or viscosity of the feed) either pneumatically or using a screw feeder. Mixing occurs inside the drying chamber, driven by its rotating disintegrator (thereby eliminating the need for additional mixing equipment). The two inlet streams are arranged in such a way that the dry powder is immediately mixed with the liquid feed so that the moisture is distributed over the entire available powder surface. The enlarged, moist surface ensures rapid evaporation of the liquid inside the drying chamber. The new feed system can be retrofitted to existing Swirl Fluidizer units.
