Some modern Distributed Control Systems have Model Predictive Control (MPC) technology embedded into the control system. The MPC is intended for small to medium MPC applications and, due to low implementation cost, have a good return on investment for small applications. Benefits of being embedded in the control system include use of the standard configuration application, standard operator interfaces and ease of implementation. In some systems, the embedded MPC can execute as fast as 1 per second. These attributes make the embedded MPC technology suitable for many applications that are considered difficult or complex control with PID controllers. These include such applications as a dead time dominate loop, override applications, feed forward, “small valve-large valve applications†and interacting loops. This presentation will show the use of embedded MPC technology for small applications that have an excellent return on investment.
