Adsorbents are widely utilized for trace contaminant removal in petroleum refining processes, including fluid catalytic cracking, catalytic reforming, isomerization, HF alkylation, benzene saturation, steam reforming hydrogen production, and many other processes. The rationale for adsorbent use includes prevention of catalyst deactivation, equipment fouling, HS&E issues, and off-spec products. This presentation will review the processes, appropriate adsorbents (molecular sieve, activated alumina, hybrid, and metal oxide/ sulfide based) and relevant adsorbent application technology for each process, as well as the issue of adsorbent reactivity when treating streams containing olefins.
