An energy stewardship program, aimed at driving energy efficiencies from no-cost operational improvements has been implemented with considerable success across the Valero refining system. Two years since commencement of the program roll out, energy use has been reduced by 5% and over $140 million per year in recurring benefits have been accrued with comparatively modest levels of expenditure. The success of this initiative relies upon the integration of technical knowledge, management systems and information technology to identify, drive and sustain energy efficiency improvements. In this presentation the essential components as well as the tools and methods used in support of developing and implementing the system are outlined. Furthermore, the role of performance monitoring systems or “dashboards” in sustaining benefits as well as a novel approach to developing energy performance targets are highlighted. Examples of best operating practices for energy optimization in refining are also provided.
