(Invited Plenary Talk) Glucose Sensors for Bioprocessing: Progress and Perspectives

The ability to continuously monitor glucose concentrations in the same manner as pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen has been a goal for bioprocessing for decades. The importance of continuous glucose monitoring has grown in recent years with the impetus of

FDA’s Process Analytical Technology initiative, advances in continuous cultivation technologies, and findings that optimal productivity and product quality require tight control over substrate concentrations. A variety of glucose monitoring strategies have been proposed and some commercialized, ranging from glucose-specific sensors to spectroscopic analyzers and from in-situ measurements to at-line systems with automated sampling. This presentation will review the history of glucose sensing for bioprocessing, current options, and some perspectives on the future.
