The tutorial presentation reviews the fundamentals of process-side fouling in an ethylene unitâs caustic tower. The general mechanisms of fouling are first discussed, with a particular focus on the precursors and differences between liquid- and gas-heavy feed slates. Common techniques for anticipating and monitoring the fouling of equipment are then presented. Finally, an assortment of proven ways to mitigate fouling such as process treatment, operational adjustments, and maintenance practices are discussed.
