Energy efficiency, safety, and environmental impact are all important issues concerning any type of combustion operations. Variability in the combustion operation, especially in terms of the fuel that is burned, whether it be fuel gas or natural gas, results in undesirable conditions. A study was performed by members of an API committee on instrumentation, control and safety systems for gas fired heaters. The study looked at the effect of variability in fuel gas composition, temperature and pressure on combustion control to evaluate the best control methods. A methodology was developed to calculate a net present value associated with the various control options. The paper will look at the various control options, the impact on combustion, and the results of the study will be explained.
