Featured Student Chapter Workshop

4:15pm - 5:15pm: Empowering Diverse Backgrounds, Unique Perspectives, and Careers

Presented by: Zawwad Jamee, Sean Fernandez, Purdue University and University of Michigan AIChE Student Chapters

In recent years, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) have been given a heavier emphasis based on the necessity to empower underrepresented groups, which is why it is important for your chapter to start considering DEI initiatives to help embolden your members and build a more inclusive community. Together, the University of Michigan and the Purdue University chapters in AIChE have developed their own chapters, placing these crucial topics as core values of our organizations. In this session, we’d talk about the successes this has done and how an organization can discuss the importance of diversifying our network, building on new perspectives, and making our careers more inclusive to all.

Track I: Powering your Community

5:2opm - 6:05 pm: Expanding Your Chapter's Influence and Impact, On Campus and Abroad

Presented by: Bryce Tyburski, University of Michigan AIChE Chapter

Looking to expand your chapter’s network to provide your members with more diverse and interconnected experiences? This workshop will cover the three primary means of expanding your chapter’s impact: your department, your university’s engineering/STEM organizations, and your network of AIChE chapters. First, we will discuss each group in further detail, covering the main benefits each group provides to your chapter and what goals and expectations to have when interacting with these groups. Then, we will discuss how to successfully plan and execute a strategy to create a sustainable engagement with each group.

6:10 pm - 6:55pm: K-12 Student Leadership Challenge

Presented by: Elia Gonzalez and Vanessa Fischer, University of Texas, San Antonio Student Chapter

This workshop introduces the Student Leadership Challenge and presents the four leadership pillars through teamwork exercises and thought-provoking activities. This workshop can be adjusted for students and classrooms from K-12 ages. The workshop takes the students through the leadership pillars and how to implement them to lead others efficiently.

The five pillars include:

  • Model the way
  • Inspire a shared vision
  • Challenge the process
  • Enable others to act
  • Encourage the heart

The workshops details how to implement ice breakers, team activities, and engage participants to build future generations of leaders.

Track II: Powering your Future

5:20pm - 6:05pm: How to Involve Students & Companies into your Student Chapter

Presented by: Ahmed Essam, University of North Dakota Student Chapter

This workshop is intended to share the best approaches when it comes to communicating with student chapters on social media and through email. It is meant to discuss the dos and don’ts of student chapter Instagrams, Twitters, YouTube accounts, and Facebook pages. Furthermore, it will discuss ideas on how to get more outreach to freshmen and sophomores through email lists, events, class announcements, and more! We can also go through how to structure an efficient student chapter website, and how to run a successful marketing committee. Our marketing committee uses great tools such as Canva and Hootsuite to create lovely, professional flyers and plan our posts, respectively. We will discuss how to utilize tools and the marketing structure we currently have: a marketing committee head, social media director, graphic designer, and newsletter chief. Our online footprint has increased exponentially these past few years and it has helped with attendance, sponsorship, and outreach.

6:10pm - 6:55pm: Perspective for Internships and Co-Ops

Presented by: Carlos Ceron Linares and Patrick Yang, AIChE Executive Student Committee, AIChE UCLA, AIChE UCI

We will be providing an overview for internships/co-ops as we as engineers know gaining experience in the field before applying for jobs or even going to graduate school is vital. This will allow us to get a sneak peek at what the work experience is like and allows us to decide which specialties we are interested in.

For the first portion, we will provide tips/tricks in terms of applying as we talk about the various resources such as HandShake, LinkedIn, career fairs, and info-sessions that provide internships and co-ops. The timing will be important as well where there are designated recruiting seasons for companies and will need proper planning beforehand accordingly. Tips for talking to recruiters and interviewers at the company will be provided as well where this will serve vital if there is success at the interviews that determine acceptances at the internship and application level (an experience which is needed for full-time position applications!).

The second half will include our personal experiences where we have done internships/research-based studies that have helped shape our views on work after school.

Track III: Powering your Peers

5:20pm - 6:05pm: Mentoring Programs

Presented by: Anthony Wagner and Nick Brunn, University of Iowa AIChE Chapter

At the University of Iowa, we have two chemical engineering mentoring programs available to students in their undergraduate years. One is a student-led program that pairs students in their first and second year with students in their third and fourth year. The other mentoring program is led by an alumnus of the University of Iowa ChemE program, pairing students with other alumni currently working in industry. We plan to discuss both of these mentoring programs.

6:10 pm - 6:55 pm: Developing a Mentorship Program and Cultivating Mentor/Mentee Relationships

Presented by: Annyn Howle and Bryce Tyburski, University of Michigan AIChE Chapter

Mentorship is an excellent opportunity for members to expand their network while considering specific areas of growth they would like to improve on. This workshop will focus on how to start and continuously grow a sustainable mentorship program in your chapter by explaining the events and planning used in our chapter’s own alumni mentorship, peer mentorship, and graduate mentorship programs. Additionally, this workshop will discuss how to cultivate good relations in mentorship to ensure that both the mentor and mentee achieve their goals when joining your chapter’s mentorship program.
