(95b) Implementing Laboratory Safety at Third-Party Laboratories

Authors

Branson, B. - Presenter, Alcor Petrolab
For an independent testing laboratory, customers can range from major petrochemical companies to independent lubricant manufacturers to private individuals interested in one-off testing. This diverse customer base results in a range of materials to be tested as well as inconsistent documentation and sample handling; both factors contribute to the unique safety challenges third-party laboratories face. Two tests – the Hot Liquid Process Simulator (HLPS) and ASTM D2879, Vapor Pressure by Isoteniscope – will be used as “case studies” to demonstrate how independent laboratories can mitigate safety risks. Discussion will include how staff training, sample intake and handling procedures, laboratory infrastructure, and even test instrument design can be employed in a manner that minimizes health and safety risks.
