Jones, D. - Presenter, TechnipFMC Process Technology
World scale ethylene (MEGA) plants continue to increase in scale. Current installed plant technology ranges from 1500 to 2000 total olefins capacity, with larger plants under consideration. This presentation/paper addresses some of the equipment design challenges associated with the application of mixed flow thermal turbocompressor technology to the cracked gas service of a 3000 kta ethane cracker. Solutions proposed are based on a comprehensive design considering aerodynamic development and testing, operating range and efficiency, rotor dynamics and other mechanical challenges. The resulting hardware solution presented can achieve an equipment risk profile consistent with currently applied equipment.
