Field Demonstration Report

Newfield Exploration Company plans to treat produced water containing high concentrations of hardness and free oil for reuse in a water flood application at its facilities near Myton, UT.

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies (VWS) received a contract from Newfield to conduct a Field Demonstration of the ROSS™ Technology to demonstrate the overall system performance with regards to Newfield’s desired effluent quality and to confirm full-scale design parameters and system operating costs. ROSS Technology includes Multiflo™ Chemical Softening and Ceramic Membrane (CeraMem®) Ultrafiltration.

During the Field Demonstration the ROSS™ Technology effectively achieved the hardness, iron, total suspended solids, and free oil & grease criteria for the treated effluent water. These results were confirmed by five sets of off-site analytical data that were collected throughout the study. We also obtained the data necessary to develop a full-scale treatment system design. The details of the treatment system, as well as process optimizations that occurred throughout the study and the data collected, are summarized in this report.

Per discussions with Newfield to conceptualize the pilot study, Newfield provided three types of produced water feed to the pilot system:

1. with scale and corrosion inhibitors

2. without scale and corrosion inhibitors

3. co-mingled produced water from the Sand Wash Facility that included river water (make-up water), pit and flow back waters

In summary we were able to successfully treat each type of produced feed water.  Each type of feed water required slightly different types and dosages of chemical additions to achieve the following treatment goals:

Total hardness < 20 mg/l

Free Oil and Grease < 0.5 mg/l

Total Suspended Solids < 0.5 mg/l

Total Iron < 0.5 mg/l

Sulfur reducing bacteria = 4 log removal rate

In summary CeraMem treatment was able to produce effluent that met the target goals while treating all three types of produced feed waters supplied. For the treatment of comingled water, the full-scale system is designed for a minimum feed water temperature of 120°F.
