Execution Challenges for Large Petrochemical Complexes in US

Chair(s)

Kapur, S., Apex PetroConsultants

Shale gas developments are transforming petrochemical industry in US and opening up tremendous opportunities for growth, particularly US Gulf Coast. The size and number of these facilities and associated investments will also pose challenges due to lack of large scale investments in the region for almost two decades. Based on the announcements in public domain, the potential investment level for petrochemical industry (base chemicals and downstream polymers/derivative facilities) will exceed forty billion dollars in US Gulf Coast region during 2013 to 2018 timeframe. This level of investment is unprecedented relative to any recent period of growth in the region. These large facilities are highly complex to plan, implement, operate, and maintain. As a follow-up to the Panel Discussions related to business side of Shale related developments in petrochemical industry in 2012 EPC, this session will focus on the execution challenges for large petrochemical facilities. Industry experts will be invited to present the background information and this will be followed by panel discussions. A diverse group of panel members will share their views about execution challenges.
