This presentation describes the formation and structure of the LatinX in ChE affinity group under the Minority Affairs Committee (MAC) from the Societal Impact Operating Council (SIOC) at AIChE. The presentation will discuss how MAC, historically focusing on improving the representation of Black engineers for over 30 years, has advocated for expanding its reach to other underrepresented groups in chemical engineering. With the implementation of the AIChE IDEAL Path, MAC has initiated changes in its bylaws to include a new community component known as affinity groups to increase inclusivity for all interested members. The reorganization of MAC as a community aims to serve better racial and ethnic groups that are underrepresented in the chemical engineering profession.

The LatinX in ChE Affinity group is one such group created as a grassroots effort of volunteers within MAC and SIOC to connect members of Latin American descent. Since 2022, the group has organized various activities to support the success of chemical engineering students and professionals at all levels. These activities include career development workshops, networking events, and discussions on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in chemical engineering. A unique aspect of the scalability and sustainability of LatinX in ChE is that the leadership board comprises students, faculty, and industry professionals, providing a space for dialogue and collaboration. The presentation will discuss best practices for creating affinity groups under MAC that promote culturally relevant educational activities and professional development opportunities, aimed at empowering other underrepresented groups.
