At NJIT we have been developing hollow fiber membrane-based continuous crystallization processes for some time. This has involved anti-solvent crystallization using porous hollow fiber membranes. We have also developed solid hollow fiber membrane-based process for cooling crystallization. Recently we have developed also continuous processes for polymer coating of particle/drug crystal suspensions for controlled release using hollow fiber membrane-based anti-solvent crystallization as well as cooling crystallization. We have now extended such processes over long lengths of time to demonstrate that such processes can be carried out successfully with same performance for extended periods of time. These processes have now been further extended to producing nanocrystals on a continuous basis. This presentation will describe recent results and provide a perspective on how these membrane-based technologies are shaping up.
